“The Art of Farming Forum”
Red Path Gallery and Tasting Room to host conversation on nurturing the land and its bounty

SEWARD, Neb. – Jeanne K. Hain Wiemer, owner and director of the Red Path Gallery and Tasting Room in Seward, Neb., would like to invite her Nebraska neighbors to her first ever “Art of Farming” forum at the gallery located at 514 Seward Street on Thursday, October 30 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

“We are inviting those who have an authentic regard and vested interest in nurturing the bounty of the land in all its forms to attend an evening conversation with neighbors across Nebraska,” Hain Wiemer said.  “The ‘Art of Farming’ forum is all about honoring nature, connecting with nature and connecting with others who share the same passion about the land and all life that arises from it.”

Hain Wiemer grew up the daughter of DeLores and the late Cy Hain on a Seward County farm.  It was there that her deep appreciation for nature was cultivated.  “Dad was a very big influence on me.  My life growing up on the farm was very peaceful.  I remember the corncrib, the barn, the cows and chickens.  My dad sincerely enjoyed working out in nature.  He always said life was a cycle. . . . His very last words to me were, ‘feed the birds.’”

“I truly believe there is a resurging passion in people to save the land.  You can feel it.  The forum is about being able to get together and freely talk about our thoughts on the environment, agriculture and how we all connect to the land in some way or another.  It’s about bringing many types of mindsets to the discussion and talking about the future.”

“To me, ‘The Art of Farming’ is the recognition that tilling of the soil and raising of animals is also a form of art.  For me, artwork comes from ‘The One’ divine source and we’re all connected, every living organism ties together,” she said.

At the forum, Hain Wiemer will also be premiering a few pieces of her own artwork that were made in honor of her dad from materials on the family farm.

“My desire has been to save the farm buildings and restore the historic and natural beauty of where I grew up.  ‘Hooked on a Master’ is the first piece of art I will be sharing.  It is a fish made out of an old farm fuel tank and represents the Master Angler my dad caught just before he died from cancer,” she said.

“My dad always told me that we have all been given an assignment in life and we should live that assignment to the fullest.  Art is my assignment.  I believe that the creative process of ‘art’ gives us a freedom to be authentic and genuine,” she added.

Hain Wiemer has also invited local agriculturists Del Ficke of Ficke Cattle Company near Pleasant Dale and Brian Brhel who farms near Denton to help inspire discussion during the forum.  Ficke has consulted across Nebraska and nationally on cattle genetics that are suited specifically to environments and is taking cropland out of production and putting it into native grasses for a more holistic approach to his livestock operation.  Brhel is using cropping systems along with livestock to improve the soil on his farm and in turn to improve the health of the food he is producing.

“I believe we are forever pioneers and must always seek new frontiers,” Hain Wiemer said.  “If we are going to improve the land for the next generation we must be willing to embark upon un-treaded fields and explore what has worked well in the past and where we need to make improvements for the future.”
